UEFA, the governing body of European football, has published the report of the Club Benefits Programme, which expresses the money distributed among federations and clubs for the loan of players to international competitions between 2020 and 2024. FC Barcelona has stood out as one of the most 'awarded' teams in this section, although LaLiga, as a competition, has been far from the European podium led by the Premier League.
According to what UEFA officially announced through the disclosure of its metrics, the governing body announced this Tuesday that 901 clubs, both from the elite and amateur football, belonging to the 55 participating national federations, shared a record amount of €233M. This, as compensation for the loan of players to international competitions.
How was the money distributed among European clubs?
The distribution mechanism approved by the UEFA Executive Committee established a reserve of 100 million euros for the loan of players in the 2020-21 and 2022-23 editions of the UEFA Nations League. Of that amount, €93M were distributed, leaving a balance of seven 'kilos' that will be used in the next cycle.
In turn, for Euro 2024, UEFA increased the funds allocated to compensate teams for releasing their players from €130 to €140M. In this new distribution, 196 clubs from 29 federations will receive financial compensation.
This new total represents a significant increase compared to the 200 'kilos' of the previous cycle, in compliance with the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2019 between UEFA and the European Club Association (ECA).
Spain, fourth in the income ranking
Regarding the distribution by countries, Spain received a total of 22.8 million euros, distributed among more than 60 combinations. LaLiga was ranked as the fourth tournament that obtained the most benefits, behind:
- Premier League: 46.8 million euros
- Serie A (Italy): 35.3 million euros
- Bundesliga (Germany): 30.3 million euros
Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, the big 'winners' in Spain
At an individual level, Real Madrid (€4.7M) and FC Barcelona (€4.4M) topped the list in Spain with incomes exceeding four 'kilos'.
