Fermín López had a bittersweet day with FC Barcelona this Sunday. The midfielder scored immediately after coming on in the second half, but was sent off a quarter of an hour later
FC Barcelona thrashed Sevilla in matchday 23 of LaLiga EA Sports (1-4) on an unusual night for Fermín López. The player from El Campillo scored just seconds after coming on for Gavi at halftime, marking his fourth goal in his last five matches under Hansi Flick. However, he spent barely a quarter of an hour on the field due to an unfortunate incident that led to his expulsion.
Fermín had just scored three goals against Valencia in just eleven days between La Liga (7-0) and the Cup (0-5), two matches where, just like last Sunday against Alavés (1-0), he had been a starter, also providing a couple of assists. Against Sevilla, Flick opted for Gavi in his XI, but the Andalusian had a lackluster first half, leaving the field with some physical discomfort. At halftime, the '16', who had been warming up since the first half, came on fired up, scoring with a header thanks to a perfect cross from Pedri González.
Hansi Flick satisfied with Fermín's performance despite the red card
However, the player from Huelva had both highs and lows in a brief appearance at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. In the 60th minute, López took too much risk going all in for a loose ball against Djibril Sow. Although the Barcelona player managed to hit the ball first, he took out the Swiss player in the process. Hernández Hernández initially showed him a yellow card, but after a VAR call, he reversed the booking to a direct red.
In the post-match press conference, Hansi Flick praised the intensity that characterizes Fermín and Gavi, reflecting on the '16's expulsion. "He scores an important goal and then gets sent off... he's intense. These things happen. It's a good lesson for the future", pointed out the Barcelona coach. For the 21-year-old player, this is his first red card in 67 official matches with Barça, where he has accumulated 16 goals, 6 assists, and 8 bookings.
