Spain advanced to the semifinals of the Nations League after an endless match against the Netherlands (3-3, 5-4 on penalties). Lamine Yamal played the full 120 minutes
Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, and Pedri González were in action this Sunday with Spain against the Netherlands (3-3, 5-4 on penalties). The match held at Mestalla went into extra time and a penalty shootout, where finally La Roja secured their qualification for the 'final four', where they will face France. Here’s how the FC Barcelona internationals performed in a grueling Sunday match.
Lamine Yamal, stellar
The winger once again led the attack for the National Team alongside Nico Williams, this time with Mikel Oyarzabal as the target man. The Real Sociedad forward scored both Spanish goals in regular time, and .,>
The '19' controlled a long pass from Dean Huijsen with the class that characterizes him, cutting inside to unleash an unstoppable shot for the opposing goalkeeper. In total, Lamine played the full 120 minutes, completing 35 of 45 passes (78%), a couple of dribbles, 7 recoveries, and 4 shots on goal. In the penalty shootout, he missed the fourth penalty, with a very predictable shot that Verbruggen saved easily.
Pedri González, opportune
The Canary entered for Dani Olmo five minutes before the end, and his presence allowed La Roja to regain control of the midfield. In 36 minutes, he only missed 4 passes out of 24 possible (83%), also creating a couple of clear chances in extra time. In the decisive shootout, he scored the sixth penalty that gave victory to Spain, with a flawless right-footed shot into the corner.
Dani Olmo, subdued
Luis de la Fuente included him in the lineup to play as Pedri, but beyond a few touches with a couple of passes in the opponent's half, he had little involvement in La Roja's play. In 84 minutes, he only had one shot blocked by an opponent, with 43 of 52 passes completed (83%). Although he created a couple of opportunities, he was not sharp in individual duels (won 3 and lost 2).
Additionally, he recovered 2 balls, causing a foul in the opponent's half. De la Fuente opted to bring in Pedri thinking about extra time, a very timely change for the outcome of the match.
Ferran Torres, inconsequential
The 'Shark' came on for Oyarzabal in the 67th minute, but could not extend his scoring streak at Mestalla. In the 51 minutes he played, he only had one shot on goal, saved by Verbruggen without much trouble. He also had little involvement in the Spanish play, with only 4 completed passes out of 7 possible.
However, Ferran showed up when he was most needed, scoring the second penalty of the shootout with a precise shot that was impossible for the Dutch goalkeeper. Although it was not his best night, he showed character and personality to make his penalty count.
