Wojciech Szczesny's debut with FC Barcelona will have to wait, at least, a couple more weeks. Although the Pole was registered in LaLiga this Saturday, he was left out of the list of those called up by Hansi Flick for the visit to Alavés. In the press conference prior to the trip to Vitoria, the German coach made clear his reasons for not counting on the Warsaw coach this Sunday, although he has exhibited impeccable physical condition in his first three training sessions with the group.
"He said he wanted to finish his career, but he is in very good shape. It is good to have his experience and his quality. When I spoke to him, I was impressed. He is a personable person and he told me that he would join me as soon as I needed him. He will contribute a lot. And he has a lot of character, but he won't be against Alavés because he needs time".
Flick avoids getting wet about Szczesny's imminent ownership
In that sense, Flick was convinced of the importance of signing the Pole, who arrives to challenge Iñaki Peña for ownership. "I think that for him playing for Barça will be a wonderful experience. If he had had any doubts he would have said no, but he told us yes. We will see him in training. We have time to work with him," argued the man from Heidelberg.
However, he avoided getting wet about Peña's possible substitution after the break, once the '25' is ready to play. "We are happy to have another player, I think Szczesny will help Iñaki. We will have more options. I am happy with the club's decision," said the German coach. At least, against Alavés, the debate in the Barça goal is settled. On matchday 10, against Sevilla, it is very likely that the Alicante player will give up his place to the Pole.
