FC Barcelona received its third red card of the season in LaLiga following the expulsion of Fermín López against Sevilla (1-4). Ferran Torres and Marc Casadó were also sanctioned in the first half of the season
The red card that Alejandro Hernández Hernández showed to Fermín López against Sevilla (1-4) was the third against a Barcelona player in LaLiga EA Sports 2024/25. Thus, FC Barcelona becomes the third team with the most expulsions this season, behind Mallorca (6), Celta (5), and Sevilla (5), while no opposing player has suffered the same fate against Hansi Flick's team.
Previously, Ferran Torres (on matchday 6 against Girona) and Marc Casadó (against Celta on matchday 14) were also sent off, although the sanction for the midfielder was due to a second yellow card. In the 60th minute, Fermín arrived late to a divided ball and, despite hitting the ball first, ended up impacting the Swiss Djibril Sow. The main referee had resolved the infraction with a warning, but the VAR alerted him that it was a violent action. After reviewing the play, the referee canceled the yellow card, showing the red to the Barcelona player, although the '16' managed to pull back his studs to avoid injuring his opponent.
The VAR audio of Fermín López's expulsion in Sevilla 1 vs 4 FC Barcelona
- Del Cerro Grande, VAR referee, to Hernández Hernández: "I recommend a review for potential serious foul play. I'm going to leave it in dynamic for you to see how he tackles and how he goes in with his leg high and his leg bends and the speed he carries".
- "In our opinion, the leg gets caught and twists dangerously for the Sevilla player".
- Hernández Hernández to VAR: "Yes, he goes in with both legs scissor-style. He enters very strongly, body control is lost. That is dangerous. I'm going to change the yellow for number 16 to a red".
Barça doubles its expulsions compared to 23/24
In the 2023/24 season, only one Barcelona player received a red card. It was Raphinha, on matchday 1 against Getafe (0-0) for elbowing Gastón Álvarez in the 42nd minute. Meanwhile, Xavi Hernández was sent off three times, in addition to another in the Champions League. This season, Hansi Flick only saw a red against Betis at the Benito Villamarín (2-2), suffering a two-match sanction.
Interestingly, all three expulsions of Barcelona players in 24/25 have occurred away from home and in the second half. Ferran received a direct red for a foul on Colombian Yaser Asprilla in the 86th minute in Montilivi, while Casadó received two yellow cards in just seven minutes (75' and 82') in Balaídos. On Sunday, Gavi and Eric García were also cautioned, while five other Sevilla players ended up booked.
