FC Barcelona are enjoying a great start to the 2024/25 LaLiga season. Hansi Flick's team is one of two teams to have managed to collect six points at the start of this campaign along with Celta Vigo and they occupy second place in the competition only on goal difference. The German coach is exciting the Blaugrana fans, because he has achieved things that their biggest rivals, Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid, have not been able to do.
Although there is still a long way to go in the competition, this has been a great start. Barça has played two games, in which they have scored four goals and conceded two. The first victory was in the debut against Valencia by a score of 2-1 at Mestalla with a double from Robert Lewandowski in a comeback after an initial goal from Hugo Duro.
The second came on August 24, in the long-awaited match against Nico Williams' Athletic Club. In Barcelona, Flick's men won 2-1 with a goal from Lamine Yamal and another from the Polish striker, who leads the competition for the 'Pichichi', while Oihan Sancet scored for Bilbao. But the German coach is not the only one to have achieved a good start to the season in recent years. In the 21st century, only seven coaches have managed to win their first three games in LaLiga, some of them achieving impressive streaks. We review which ones they are.
Frank Rijkaard (2006-2007)
The first time this happened in the 21st century was in the 2006-2007 season with Frank Rijkaard. The coach linked three consecutive victories with 9 goals for and two against. That year they finished in second place in the competition. The three games they won were against Celta (3-2), Osasuna (3-0) and Racing (3-0).
Pep Guardiola (2009-2010)
As expected, the historic Pep is on this list with six consecutive victories at the start of LaLiga, which they ended up winning with impressive performances. 17 goals for and only three against for one of the best starts in the tournament. Their victories were against Sporting Gijón (3-0), Getafe (2-0), Atlético de Madrid (5-2), Racing (4-1), Málaga (2-0) and 1-0 (Almería).
Tito Vilanova (2012-2013)
The great Tito gave us six victories at the start of his only season managing the culé team, in which he had the honour of winning the title. They won six consecutive games with 17 goals for and 5 against. Victories against Real Sociedad (5-1), Osasuna (2-1), Valencia (1-0), Getafe (4-1), Granada (2-0) and Sevilla (3-2).
Gerardo 'Tata' Martino (2013-2014)
The Argentine coach also left his mark on the Barcelona team with 8 consecutive victories. Despite this, they later fell in performance and finished second in the tournament. 28 goals for and 6 against for the best start of the team in the 21st century. Their victories were against Levante (7-0), Malaga (1-0), Valencia (3-2), Sevilla (3-2), Rayo Vallecano (4-0), Real Sociedad (4-1), Almeria (2-0) and Valladolid (4-1).
Luis Enrique (2014-2015 / 2015-2016)
The Spanish coach made history in his first season with FC Barcelona by winning the treble. However, he only won his first four games in LaLiga with 11 goals scored and 0 against. His victories were against Elche (3-0), Villarreal (1-0), Athletic Club (2-0) and Levante (5-0). In his second season he revalidated the title also with four victories at the start. 8 goals scored and two conceded with victories against Athletic (1-0), Malaga (1-0), Atletico Madrid (2-1) and Levante (4-1).
Ernesto Valverde (2017-2018 / 2018-2019)
In 2017-2018, Valverde won LaLiga with a great performance and after winning his first seven games. 23 goals for and 2 against with wins against Betis (2-0), Alavés (2-0), Espanyol (5-0), Getafe (2-1), Eibar (6-1), Girona (3-0) and Las Palmas (3-0). For the following campaign they retained the title but only won the first four games: Alavés (3-0), Valladolid (1-0), Huesca (8-2) and Real Sociedad (2-1) with 14 goals scored and three conceded.
Ronald Koeman (2020-2021)
The Dutch coach achieved four victories at the start of the 2020-2021 campaign, but was only third in LaLiga. 13 goals for and 2 against. Wins against Elche (3-0), Atheltic (3-2), Villarreal (4-0) and Celta (3-0). A rather disappointing season for the culé team.
Now, it should be noted that these are the coaches who have won since the start of the season. The best start to the league in recent years was in 2022-2023 with Xavi Hernández. They started by drawing with Rayo (0-0), but then they linked six consecutive victories, adding 16 points, scoring 20 goals and conceding only two. Can Flick improve these records? We will soon find out.
