Barça is much closer to the League title after the victory against Mallorca. How many points do Flick's team need to sing the championship?

Calendar of FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona is close to its 28th League title after the narrow victory against Mallorca (1-0). With only 5 matchdays to play and a Clásico against Real Madrid at Montjuïc just around the corner, Hansi Flick's team is just a couple of steps away from consecration.

For now, Barça has 76 points, 6 more than Real Madrid. The Whites can get closer again to 4 points if they defeat Getafe, which will maintain the difference with 15 units to play for.

In the next matchday, the Azulgrana team visits a Valladolid already relegated, while the 'merengues' will host Celta de Vigo. This matchday precedes the last League Clásico, at Montjuïc, on Sunday, May 11.

How many points does Barça need to be champion?

In principle, an Azulgrana victory could seal the title, beyond the fact that Madrid manages to stay at 4 points before the visit to Catalonia. In that scenario, Barça would move 7 points away from the Whites, with only 9 to play for.

Thus, Barça would need at least 9 more points, that is, reach 85 to secure the League title. However, a slip-up by Madrid before the Clásico can anticipate the Azulgrana championship. And if Carlo Ancelotti's team, for example, draws with Celta, they will be 6 points behind the 'culés' the next matchday.

A defeat in the Clásico would seal LaLiga for Barcelona, as Flick's team would have a 9-point advantage, in addition to sealing the victory in the direct confrontation. Hence, with 82 points, Barça also has possibilities of being League champion on matchday 35.

🏆Barça would be champion with...

  • 82 points: if Real Madrid draws against Celta and loses the Clásico against Barça.
  • 85 points: if Barça defeats Valladolid, Real Madrid, and Espanyol, even if the Whites win their other three matches.

For Barça, the League schedule holds the visit to Valladolid next matchday, on Saturday, May 3. The duel comes in the middle of the Champions League semi-finals against Inter Milan, so Flick will again bet on an XI with a majority of substitutes.

After that, it's time to host Real Madrid on Sunday the 11th, in what is shaping up to be a real final for LaLiga. The Azulgrana team dreams of arriving with the ticket to the Champions League final in their pocket, in addition to the title of the Copa del Rey.

On matchday 36, the 'culés' can mathematically secure the championship against Espanyol on Thursday, May 15. Barça won its last League (the 22-23) in Cornellà, a precedent that fuels the Azulgrana illusion of celebrating again after a derby.

The last two matchdays will be against complicated rivals, both in Champions League positions. Barça will host Villarreal in what will be their last match at Montjuïc and, afterwards, will close the tournament in San Mamés against Athletic.
