LaLiga and its new strategy in the transfer market: what to expect?

Calendar of FC Barcelona

LaLiga has given the green light to a significant change regarding player transfers that will be implemented for the upcoming summer market. Recently, it has been reported that the league approved the opening of a special transfer window from June 1 to June 10. This move particularly supports the teams that will participate in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

In Spain, both Real Madrid and Atlético will be able to strengthen their squads for the competition that will take place in the United States from June 14 to July 13. Although it is emphasized that, despite other teams not participating in this tournament, they will be able to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure equality of chances.

It is important to highlight that this decision to open a special transfer window on the occasion of the Club World Cup 2025 aims primarily to allow the participating teams to effectively strengthen and arrive in optimal conditions for this tournament. Similarly, this measure was taken by FIFA last October and is subject to the approval of each governing body of football in each country.

Javier Tebas has officially announced the approval of this special transfer window in LaLiga

In this regard, LaLiga has already given the green light to the opening of this atypical transfer window, as recently announced by the president of the league, Javier Tebas, during his speech at an ISDE Sports Convention. The Hispanic-Costa Rican leader expressed: "We approved it today in a Club Assembly. We made a special provision for this".

Contract extensions for a limited time will be allowed

It is also worth remembering that this special transfer window, as mentioned by FIFA, will also serve for the extension of contracts for a limited period, due to the expiration of some contracts before the end of the 2025 Club World Cup. It should not be overlooked that the contracts of some players usually end on June 30, while the major tournament organized by FIFA will extend beyond that date. This situation could pose certain legal complications regarding the assets whose agreements with their respective teams expire that year, if FIFA did not authorize this extension.

There will be another transfer window starting June 16

Regardless of the opening of this special transfer window that will close on June 10, it is worth noting that it will not be the only opportunity for clubs to sign during the summer. It is expected that the regular transfer period will open from June 16 and extend until August 31, having a much longer duration than usual. It is relevant to keep in mind that the summer transfer window in Spain usually starts on July 1.
