Lamine Yamal: MVP against Atlético with his 6th goal in LaLiga 2024-25

FC Barcelona earned three golden points against Atlético de Madrid (2-4) with a memorable comeback in LaLiga EA Sports 2024-25. Lamine Yamal's goal in the 90+2 minute allowed Hansi Flick's team to take the lead in a match where the culés were losing 2-0 at the 70th minute. Later, another goal from Ferran Torres sealed the Blaugrana victory at the Metropolitano.

The player from Mataró received a pass from Pedri González and, after a cut to shake off Connor Gallagher's mark, unleashed a left-footed shot that left Jan Oblak with no options after a deflection off Reinildo. The '19' had a clear chance right at the start of the match, thanks to a good one-two with Dani Olmo. The young player shot with his left foot towards the far post of the Slovenian goalkeeper, but the ball went slightly wide, grazing the base of the post.

Yamal was the most active player in the Blaugrana attack in the first half, earning a yellow card for Reinildo in the 35th minute. Then, in the 49th minute, he created another good combination with Olmo, but his shot with the instep went wide in a very clear opportunity that could have represented the 1-1 equalizer at the start of the second half. Just before the 2-2 scored by Ferran, Lamine had tried another shot that Oblak caught without problems.

In total, the '19' completed 48 of 58 passes (83%), with 6 successful dribbles out of 9 attempts (67%) and won 11 duels out of 21. He also recovered 5 balls, causing a couple of fouls and committing another pair. On a night when Barça showed character and personality, Lamine shone brightly again, celebrating his first goal since matchday 11 against Real Madrid (0-4).

After the match, the young player valued the Blaugrana reaction in the last 20 minutes. "From the rage and impotence, we brought out our best side. Robert's goal (2-1) was very important. Also Ferran's goal (2-2). Then the others came almost on their own", began the player from Mataró. In that sense, he highlighted the importance of scoring again in LaLiga after 12 matches without being able to do so in the tournament.

"I was clear that if I scored, it would be in important matches. I don't focus on not scoring in matches that the team wins", explained Lamine. The winger has 6 goals and 11 assists (leading the competition) in 24 appearances in LaLiga (1,975 minutes). Additionally, he had just scored and assisted in the victory against Benfica (3-1) that secured Barça's qualification to the Champions quarter-finals.

In total, he has 13 goals and 17 assists in 38 matches across all competitions (3,092') for the 17-year-old forward. "Beating Atlético today is making a statement. It's about regaining the lead with one less match", pointed out the MVP of another crazy match against Atlético, the only rival that the culés had not defeated this season in two official encounters (Monaco also won both matches against Barça, but one of them, the Gamper, was friendly).
