Gerard Piqué had a spicy confrontation with Iker Casillas during a promotional event. The former FC Barcelona player took several jabs at Real Madrid for their complaints about refereeing
Gerard Piqué participated alongside Iker Casillas in the presentation of a new advertising campaign at LaLiga's headquarters, where the former FC Barcelona player took the opportunity to throw several jabs at Real Madrid for their complaints about refereeing. The current president of the Kings League referred to the controversial letter from the 'White House' to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), with a copy to the Higher Sports Council (CSD) to protest against the Spanish refereeing system, a statement that reaffirms the 'merengue' stance when facing a crisis: diverting attention towards a controversy.
"The statement is a full-blown smokescreen because they have been doing this for 120 years and, when they lose, they need to talk about something else, because that's what they want. The conversation about referees will always exist, and this is something Madrid has always done, turning on the 'machinery' when things are not going well, we are used to it," explained 'Geri'. After the Catalan's words, a spicy confrontation began with Casillas, each defending their club.
Piqué reminds Madrid of the refereeing error that gave them their seventh Champions League
Piqué ignited the controversy when both were asked about what they considered their best match against Barça and Madrid. The now Catalan businessman did not hesitate to state: "In terms of gameplay, the Champions League final against United. If it's against Madrid, the 2-6 at the Bernabéu". Iker, for his part, pointed to the match of his debut, to which Gerard replied sarcastically, "Oh, is the best match in Madrid's history the one when you debuted?”, forcing the former Spanish goalkeeper to change his answer.
“The final of the Seventh,” said Casillas, setting the stage for a comeback from the Barça youth player: "Mijatovic's goal was offside. Not with statements or anything”. Indeed, the Champions League final of 97-98 (in Amsterdam) was resolved in favor of the whites (1-0) against Juventus thanks to a goal by Predrag Mijatovic, who was clearly offside. The same would happen 18 years later, against Atlético in Milan, where Madrid reached penalties thanks to a goal by Sergio Ramos, also offside.
The exchange between Piqué and Casillas continued with the response of the former Madrid captain to the 'merengue' letter. "I think the statement is fine... I lack a former player in VAR, who knows when an action can be involuntary”. 'Geri' took the opportunity again to retort with a jab: “Of course, a former player from Madrid...". Finally, both shared their predictions for LaLiga. According to the Catalan, Barça will take the title and Madrid will be fourth, even surpassed by Athletic. Iker, on the other hand, believes that the table will finish as it is now, with the culés third behind Real and Atlético.
