FC Barcelona, with Deco as spokesperson, has made it clear whether or not it will bet on the signing of a goalkeeper for the next summer market as a possible successor to Marc-André ter Stegen
The injury to Marc-André ter Stegen, the historic goalkeeper of FC Barcelona, has raised a lot of uncertainties. Why? Mainly due to the absence of a top-level goalkeeper like the German, an issue that has apparently prompted the need for the Culés to consider signing a goalkeeper of good level and potential who could become the successor to the native of Mönchengladbach.
In this context, some sectors have shown a certain lack of confidence in Iñaki Peña, who ended up assuming the starting position in Barcelona's goal and has gradually consolidated his position. Additionally, the Barcelona team decided to search the market for an experienced goalkeeper who could strengthen that position (Wojciech Szczęsny), as, apart from Peña, they did not have an alternative with great experience. The reserve team goalkeepers, Ander Astralaga and Diego Kochen, were the only backup options in case of need.
Barcelona's stance on signing a goalkeeper as a successor to Marc-André ter Stegen
However, when it comes to the goalkeeping position, despite the rumors surrounding this topic, it doesn't seem like there will be significant changes in the near future. At least, that's what Deco, the sporting director of FC Barcelona, confirmed in an interview with 'Mundo Deportivo', where he revealed the club's plan to strengthen this position, ruling out, at least for the moment, any major signings.
"No. Marc still has three years left on his contract, he's young for a goalkeeper, 32 years old, and we must focus on his recovery and return. That's why having two goalkeepers who give us guarantees is important, so we don't rush his return. We are analyzing it little by little, I don't think it's something we need to consider right now," Deco expressed, emphasizing Barcelona's confidence in being able to count on Ter Stegen as their regular 'number 1' when he recovers from his complete rupture of the right knee patellar tendon.
The 'top' goalkeeper that the Blaugrana club has currently ruled out signing
In this sense, Deco has temporarily ruled out the option of signing Diogo Costa from Porto, clarifying the reasons behind this decision. "First, it's not on the table because we have Ter Stegen. I don't see any goalkeeper coming in now because when Marc is back, we won't sign anyone for him. Also, if I were Diogo, I don't know if I would come to Barcelona to be a substitute," the Portuguese began.
"We are not considering his signing and if I were in his place, I would want to go to a club where I know I will play. We are happy with the goalkeepers we have today. I wish him luck and, first and foremost, that he succeeds with Porto," Deco concluded.
It's worth noting that beyond the option of Diogo Costa, other options have apparently been considered to reinforce the Blaugrana goal, such as Lucas Chevalier from LOSC Lille, Marcin Bułka from OGC Nice, and even Bart Verbruggen from Brighton. However, it seems that these names might take a back seat, as Barcelona is clear that they will continue to rely on Marc-André ter Stegen as the short-term starter, maintaining the dynamics with the substitutes and possibly promoting a talent from the reserve team in the future.
