Atlético de Madrid does not rule out keeping Clément Lenglet, but for a price lower than Barça's expectations
Clément Lenglet is one of the issues that FC Barcelona must resolve, no matter what, this summer. The French international renewed until 2027 to defer his high salary (16 million euros gross), but the club cannot afford to pay a majority percentage of his salary for another season. In the 2024-25 season, Atlético de Madrid took on 4 'kilos' after negotiating his loan for a year.
In this sense, the 'colchoneros' have the first option to buy the player from Beauvais next summer. The center-back will turn 30 in June, but he has managed to earn the trust of Diego Simeone despite some occasional mistakes in recent weeks. In total, he has accumulated 2,457 minutes of action spread over 29 matches, being a starter in the last three league matches with the 'rojiblancos'.
In this regard, the latest reports indicate an offer of around 8 million euros from Atleti for Lenglet, as long as the defender agrees to lower his current salary. The Frenchman has always shown a good disposition to resolve his departure from Barça, but his high salary has been a determining factor for teams like Tottenham or Aston Villa to rule out his transfer.
Barça must part ways with Lenglet this summer
For Barça, the ideal situation was to receive around 10 million net for his transfer, considering all the money that his signing has cost between transfer (35.9M € in 2018) and salary. However, the club's problems with financial 'Fair Play' force them to reduce the wage bill, and Lenglet, like Ansu Fati, is one of the fixed discards of the team that generates the most problems for the squad.
With that in mind, Atlético has an advantage in negotiating a lower transfer fee for Clément Lenglet, as long as Simeone gives the green light to the operation and the 'rojiblanca' board convinces the center-back to negotiate an affordable salary. The Frenchman has also received very interesting offers from the Arab league, but for now, he does not plan to leave the European elite. Will Barça be able to resolve this 'soap opera' next July?
