FC Barcelona seems to have in its sights a list of candidates to sign for the club to succeed Robert Lewandowski, although apparently there is already one with a profile that closely resembles that of the Pole
From FC Barcelona, it is clear that they probably have one of the best, if not the best, forwards in the world at the moment in Robert Lewandowski. The Warsaw native seems to be experiencing a second youth in the 2024-25 season, tallying a total of 19 goals in 17 matches, being the main offensive reference for the blue and red team and one of the main contenders for the Golden Boot this season, a prize he is contesting head-to-head with Sporting Club de Portugal's goal scorer, Viktor Gyökeres, or Erling Haaland from Manchester City.
However, at Barcelona, they are also aware that, despite the exceptional performance shown by Robert Lewandowski, it is time to start looking for his successor. This need is not due to sporting reasons but to other issues, such as the fact that the player's contract with the club is coming to an end, in addition to the worthy generational shift. If nothing extraordinary happens, 'Lewy's' contract with the blue and red club should end on June 30, 2026, when the Pole will be 37 years old.
Faced with this situation, it is not surprising that Barcelona may be considering various alternatives to find a replacement for the Warsaw 'killer' in the team. The names being evaluated are those of renowned players, as it is no secret that the blue and red team intends to make a statement by bringing in a stellar figure to reinforce the offensive line not only for the present but also with an eye on the future.
The forward most similar to Robert Lewandowski, according to Deco
Now, regarding the possible signing of a top-level forward, the sporting director of Barcelona, Deco, in an interview with the media outlet 'Mundo Deportivo,' has expressed the club's perspectives regarding the option of incorporating a forward who could succeed Robert Lewandowski and who, in his opinion, has a profile that is considerably similar to that of the Polish goal scorer. "I think it is very difficult to find a forward like Robert today. There are one or two at this level. Perhaps Haaland or another. There aren't many of this level available," stated the Portuguese executive.
However, in that line of thinking, Deco has not confirmed that the Catalan club will immediately launch an offensive for Erling Haaland, postponing the issue of signing the talented Norwegian forward, or any other alternative for the offensive line, for the future. "First, we have to know if Haaland is what we want for the future. We don't know that now. Today we don't want any 'number nines.' We have Robert. We are not planning anything with any 'number nine.' When the time comes to make a decision, and I have to make it because I am the one at the club, then we will consider the options. But I think it is not the time to talk about any player," emphasized the former footballer.
Will Barcelona make an offer for Viktor Gyökeres soon?
Regarding the option of acquiring the services of the 26-year-old Swedish goal scorer, Viktor Gyökeres, the sporting director has mentioned that Barcelona has him on their radar, but they currently have no plans to make an offer for him. "He is a good player, he has been scoring goals for a long time in Portugal, we know him like many others, but he is not our priority today, nor are we looking for any 'number nine' to replace Robert because we want him to remain happy, scoring goals, and at least continue for another season," stated Deco.
Barça continues to trust Lewandowski as their flagship 'number 9'
To conclude, the blue and red club's sporting director has reiterated that, at least for the moment, in the sporting planning of Barça, the signing of a top-level center forward is not considered a priority, as Lewandowski continues to maintain a very high level, providing a significant amount of time for the club to reflect on its options for the future and adequately strengthen the squad. "It is not a priority because we have to focus on this season. Of course, we have to work on the future, but if we focus more on the future, we forget about the present. We have to think about what we have to do now and not what needs to be done in the future, because what happens this season can condition the future. It is not enough to just think about the future," he concluded.
