Barça's good offensive moment has forced a rethinking of the transfer market. The sports management now focuses its efforts on strengthening the defense
The sports planning of FC Barcelona for the 2025-26 incorporation market has undergone a major shift in terms of priorities and areas to be reinforced. All this, of course, subject to the option that the azulgrana team enters the 1/1 rule this summer, something that will depend on the new VIP seats at the Spotify Camp Nou being completed before June 30.
Initially, it seemed clear that the great need was to strengthen the offensive front, specifically with the incorporation of a top-level natural left winger and a guaranteed '9'. However, with the progress of the 2024-25 season and the good performance of the culé attack, those priorities have changed.
The culé forward line responds and changes the plans
FC Barcelona has effectively resolved the absence of a natural left winger with the reconversion of Raphinha in that demarcation. Although the native of Porto Alegre is not a born left winger, his performance has been remarkable, with 28 goals and 22 assists in 46 matches. The '11' fit perfectly into Hansi Flick's scheme, who values his ability to overflow and his versatility.
This performance has also cast doubt on the need to acquire a player like Nico Williams (Athletic Club) —the club's favorite—, or others like Luis Díaz (Liverpool) or Rafael Leão (AC Milan). Bringing one of them would most likely mean relegating Raphinha to a secondary role, something that is not currently contemplated seeing the great level that the Brazilian is showing, one of the immovable players of the German coach.
Lewandowski and his alternatives, total reliability
In the center forward position, FC Barcelona also gives the impression of having the situation under control. Robert Lewandowski, despite his 36 years, is experiencing a second youth, with 40 goals in 46 duels. His renewal is on the way, and the club is confident that he can perform at the highest level, at least, for one more season.
In turn, Ferran Torres has proven to be a luxury revulsive (16 goals and four assists), providing solutions both as a '9' and on the wings. To this is added the versatility of Dani Olmo, who can act as a false nine or left winger. In short, the forward line seems more than covered for now.
Defense: the new priority of the sports management
With the offensive front working at full capacity, the eyes are now on the defense. According to sources close to the sports management, the great priority for this market is to strengthen the defensive line, especially the right back. Jules Koundé has been an undisputed starter, but the lack of rotations could take its toll on him physically. The club is looking for a player who can share minutes with him in a season that is expected to be demanding.
Reinforcing the central axis is also not ruled out. Although that will depend on what happens with Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araujo, whose contractual situations could influence the decisions.
