Barcelona would have one of the most solid defenders in the Premier League on their radar this season, currently at the service of Nottingham Forest
The FC Barcelona, as has been demonstrated on more than one occasion, has no doubt that, despite currently having several players in a specific area of the field, it constantly monitors various options that could provide even more depth in that particular position. Furthermore, the culé team seeks to ensure that it has players who not only strengthen the position in the present but also have potential for the future.
In this regard, Barcelona is apparently closely following a player from the Premier League who belongs to one of the surprise teams of this season in the English competition, a team in which he is demonstrating excellent skills and stands out as one of the most attractive defenders in the local tournament. Moreover, this player seems willing to change clubs soon in pursuit of advancing his professional career.
According to reports from 'SPORT', FC Barcelona has noted the name of Murillo Santiago Costa dos Santos (Murillo), a 22-year-old defender currently playing for Nottingham Forest. The São Paulo native has a contract with the club until June 30, 2028 and, apparently, the 'Tricky Trees' would be open to considering a significant offer for the defender, whose current market value, according to 'Transfermarkt' metrics, is €40 million.
The conditions that 'support' the possible signing of Murillo by Barcelona
Murillo, who, by the way, received his first call-up to the Brazilian national team for this November FIFA date, has apparently been monitored by Barcelona since his time at Corinthians. Since then, he has developed as a left-back, a position that is scarce in the culé squad.
Murillo stands out for his great physicality and presence, providing significant reliability in the defensive line as a player capable of adjusting and covering for his teammates, which brings security and bravery at the individual level. A notable detail about the Brazilian is his ability to make clean plays from the back line, a highly valued attribute at Barcelona.
Will Barça consider making an offer for Murillo soon?
Now, it remains to be seen if Murillo, who to date is the only positional player from Nottingham Forest to have played every minute of the season so far (990 minutes across 11 matches), can have enough impact for Barcelona to consider making an offer for him.
Despite the fact that Barça currently has six defenders in its squad (Pau Cubarsí, Iñigo Martínez, Ronald Araújo, Andreas Christensen, Eric García, and Jules Koundé), three of these players are injured (Araújo, García, and Christensen) and one of them plays as a full-back (Koundé), leaving the team with limited options to reinforce its defensive line. At times, they are forced to rely on youth players like Sergi Domínguez or Andrés Cuenca, who still lack experience in the First Division and whose youth suggests they need more playing time.
Moreover, among all the names mentioned above, only Iñigo Martínez, the most veteran of all, and Andrés Cuenca are left-footed, which makes the possible signing of Murillo, a left-footed defender, a potential reinforcement for that area with a player who, given the need, could also play as a left-back. This versatility could give him some advantage in the consideration of signings by Barcelona.
