In South Africa, there is great anticipation regarding FC Barcelona's interest in Relebohile Mofokeng. The 20-year-old winger could sign for the Barça B team 'at no cost' this summer
Relebohile Mofokeng is the new great hope of South African football, a market that FC Barcelona has been closely monitoring for years. According to 'SPORT', there is a lot of excitement in the country that hosted the 2010 World Cup about the possible signing of the current Orlando Pirates forward by the Barça B team. At least that’s what former South African player Doctor Khumalo indicated, who claims that Barça "has seen something special" in the 20-year-old winger.
I don’t think they will throw him into the deep end without preparation. They have seen something in him and want to work on it now so that in two years he can be ready for the first team, Khumalo commented in an interview with a local media outlet. Mofokeng has scored 8 goals and provided 11 assists in 31 matches (2,630 minutes) with his club this season, standing out for his speed, dribbling, and finishing quality in attack.
Relebohile Mofokeng, a key reinforcement for Barça Atlètic?
If they decide to sign the South African forward, the club would incorporate him into Barça Atlètic, which has had a disappointing performance this season following the departure of Rafa Márquez and several key players from the squad that nearly achieved promotion to Segunda last season. Barcelona has only had one player born in South Africa in its entire history, Steve Mokone. The forward was with the blaugrana team in the 1959/60 season but did not debut with the first team because the Catalans had filled all their foreign player slots upon his arrival. He eventually went on loan to Marseille and later played for Torino and Valencia.
The advantage with Relebohile Mofokeng is that he would arrive 'at no cost', as his contract ends in June. In addition to the blaugrana team, Egypt's Zamalek and other Premier League clubs (Leicester being one of them) are keeping an eye on the future of the 'gem' from Orlando Pirates. The winger joined the club in 2022 and has scored 14 goals and provided 18 assists in 71 official matches. Will Mofokeng be the figure that the Barça B team needs to escape from Primera RFEF?
