Barça is considering signing a new goalkeeper, but who will be the chosen one? Beyond the trust in Ter Stegen and Szczesny, the club is clear about the profile of who will be the next culé goalkeeper.
FC Barcelona hopes to recover the best version of Marc-André ter Stegen in the 2025/26 season, once the German international overcomes the physical problems that have plagued him in the last two seasons. Furthermore, the management also seems willing to give a vote of confidence to Wojciech Szczesny, who has managed to earn the starting position this year, surpassing Iñaki Peña who seems convinced to step aside next summer.
However, beyond having the goal covered for the upcoming season, the management does not rule out going for another goalkeeper in the next market, as long as there is sufficient financial margin for it. In principle, at Can Barça they understand that both the German (32) and the Pole (34) will soon require a reliable replacement and there is already a clear profile of the type of goalkeeper that should be signed.
The idea is to incorporate a tall goalkeeper (with an average height of 1.90 m), young, but not too young (around 23-25 years old) and with international experience. Furthermore, the priority is to bring in a '1' who conveys full security with the gloves and not so much with the feet, although Ter Stegen has accustomed the team to his quality in playing out as a sweeper.
The options that interest Barça the most for their goalkeeping position
For now, there are two names that are strongly resonating within the azulgrana management. Deco seems to lean towards Diogo Costa, the owner of the goal for Porto and the Portugal national team. The 25-year-old goalkeeper is represented by Jorge Mendes and could arrive in Catalonia for a figure close to 45 million euros, as his contract expires in 2025 and the 'dragons' do not plan to sell him.
On the other hand, Joan Laporta would prefer to have a Spanish goalkeeper. Since Víctor Valdés (2003-2014), no local player has managed to settle in the azulgrana goal. The most reliable option for now is Joa García (23 years old), who is having a remarkable season with Espanyol. The player from Sallent de Llobregat could change teams for 30 'kilos', considering that his contract with the 'pericos' ends in 2028 and it is unlikely that the Catalans will accept to lower the price of his clause.
Barça was also very interested in Giorgi Mamardashvili, but Liverpool got ahead last summer by paying 30M € to Valencia. Will the club decide to sign another goalkeeper this year? We will have to wait until summer to define the azulgrana market plan, which inevitably involves the need to cash in with a couple of 'top' sales. With the team back to the 1:1 rule, it will be much less complex to incorporate players, as long as there is enough money in the bank.
