Barça persists in its interest for Gyökeres, but Sporting does not relent in its demands

Calendar of FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona is looking to strengthen its attack with a high-level forward, and Viktor Gyökeres is one of its main options. The Swedish forward's ability to play with his back to goal and his scoring effectiveness make him an ideal '9' for Hansi Flick's team. However, Sporting expects to receive around 75 million euros for the forward, a price that Barça is trying to reduce.

In this regard, recent rumors point to the interest of the Blaugrana team in offering players like Ferran Torres, Ansu Fati, or even, waiving the economic rights of Francisco Trincão to facilitate the transfer of a Gyökeres who will definitely leave Lisbon this summer, despite his contract ending in 2028. Rui Borges' team has managed to maintain the lead in the Portuguese league, but their decline after the departure of Rúben Amorim has been disastrous.

Despite the poor performance of the 'lions', Gyökeres has maintained an impressive scoring record, with 40 goals and 10 assists in 41 matches (3,250 minutes) so far this season. Not surprisingly, Deco, Barça's sporting director, has accelerated contacts with the forward's camp to finalize the signing as soon as possible, although the presence of Robert Lewandowski (who has another year on his contract) complicates the financial fit for the Swedish signing.

Will Sporting accept a swap for Gyökeres?

Besides Barça, other clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal are also interested in Viktor, which could complicate negotiations for the Catalans. In any case, the club hopes to convince the forward to wait for a Blaugrana offer, which will also depend on the millions that may come in from the departure of several 'discarded' players, such as Ansu Fati.

For all this, Joan Laporta is willing to make a significant financial effort to sign Gyökeres, but he also seeks to include players in the negotiation to reduce the final price. However, the final decision will always be in the hands of the players, as long as their contract is not close to expiring. This is the case, for example, of Ferran Torres, whose link with the club ends in 2027 and, for now, has the full confidence of the coaching staff to stay.

Moreover, it remains to be seen whether Sporting is interested in a swap to incorporate one or more Barça players. In principle, the 'lions' aim to receive only money for their 'killer', a stance that the big clubs in Portugal (Benfica, Porto) usually implement to maximize their usual good judgment in the market. The Swedish forward arrived in Lisbon in 2023 from Coventry City for 24 million euros.
