Joshua Kimmich refuses to be one of the protagonists of the summer transfer market. The Bayern Munich player was on everyone's lips due to a possible exit. However, everything changed with the player's own decision to honour his contract with the Bavarian team. Now, the German board will do everything necessary to extend his contract.
World champion with the German national team in 2014, Kimmich is one of the best midfielders in Europe and is called to be the next leader of Bayern. With Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller living what seem to be their last seasons as professional players, the 29-year-old player could be the next captain of the team that from 2024/25 will be led by Vincent Kompany.
The midfielder has been on FC Barcelona's agenda for a long time and even the Barça board thought about making an offer for him in case they decided to sell him. All this despite the fact that he is one of the most expensive players of the summer and one of the highest earners in Germany. Another option that was considered in Barcelona was to wait until 2025, the date on which his contract ends, to sign him as a free agent in case he chose not to renew. However, the German leadership has no intention of letting him go and, if they do, there would be no shortage of suitors, so it would be a tough fight between Barça and clubs such as Real Madrid or PSG, who have also been interested in his services.
Bayern want to renew Kimmich
On the possibility of a renewal, the Bavarian team's sporting director, Max Eberl, said the following: "There was an initial exchange of views on a renewal of Joshua's contract. It was a very good and positive conversation. We will have more conversations. I think that the perception generated in Germany does not do him justice. Joshua has been an important player for Bayern for many years and should continue to be so in the future."
Another thing Eberl said was that Bayern always work ahead of time and that the midfielder was never in doubt for the team's plans for the coming years. "We always plan things in advance. It was clear to us that Josh would end up in midfield again. We thought about it," he concluded. From now on, Kimmich will once again be in a position that he likes.
