Does the CSD determine the future of Olmo and Pau? LaLiga remains an obstacle
Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor were registered thanks to the ruling of the Superior Sports Council (CSD) until the end of the 2024-25 season. The final resolution from the governmental body, issued on Thursday, April 3, upheld the appeal presented by FC Barcelona, allowing both players to maintain their valid licenses until June 30, 2025, the date when the season officially ends, according to the Spanish football calendar.
This decision overturned the previous agreement of the Monitoring Commission of the RFEF-LaLiga Coordination Agreement, which had denied their registrations, based on the premise that this body lacked the authority to take such action, in addition to protecting the labor rights of the players in accordance with the Sports Law. Furthermore, in Olmo's case, the attacking midfielder played in the last FIFA date with the National Team, which shielded him by the Federation for the remainder of the 24-25 season.
Can Barça lose Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor this summer?
However, there is still a possibility that both Dani and Pau may see their future in Barcelona compromised for the upcoming season. In principle, everything is subject to the economic and administrative situation of the club at the end of the current season. The CSD ruling is a temporary solution that does not resolve the underlying problem, as Barça still does not comply with LaLiga's financial 'Fair Play' until it manages to validate the documentation related to the sale of VIP boxes at Spotify Camp Nou with the new auditor of the association, Crowe Global.
So far, the operation has not been validated by the association to free up sufficient salary mass. Therefore, if Barcelona does not regularize its situation before June 30, 2025, either through the validation of that operation, the sale of players, or the activation of new economic 'levers', it will not be able to register Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor for the 2025-2026 season as it will exceed its salary margin.
In the case of Dani Olmo, his contract included a clause that allowed him to become a free agent if he was not registered, which could be activated again if the club does not resolve the issue in time, representing a significant loss both sportingly and economically (considering the 60 million euros of his transfer plus the years of contract). With the forward, although a similar clause is not mentioned in his contract (valid until 2029), his continuity would also be at risk if there is no salary space.
The CSD decision should protect Olmo and Pau Víctor until the end of their contracts
Nevertheless, in the Barça offices, there is full confidence regarding the durability and weight of the decision of the Superior Sports Council. Regardless of the discrepancies over the 'Fair Play' issue, the governmental ruling indicates that both players will have their federative license guaranteed until the end of their contracts, allowing the club to have total freedom over their registrations.
For now, both are registered until the end of this season (June 30, 2025), but Barcelona still risks compromising their registrations in the summer if it does not adjust its financial situation to comply with LaLiga regulations. Uncertainty persists and the club will need to act in the coming months to avoid that scenario, as it is seen that the competition led by Javier Tebas changes its stance at every moment, always with a detrimental position for the interests of the culés.
