Bayern Munich's sporting director, Max Eberl, reaffirmed the Bavarian team's confidence in resolving the renewal of Alphonso Davies and other key players in their squad
The future of Alphonso Davies seems to drift further away from LaLiga with each passing day. The 24-year-old defender, the preferred option for Real Madrid to strengthen the left flank and who was also on FC Barcelona's radar, is on the verge of signing a new contract with the Bavarian club. In a recent interview, the sporting director of Munich, Max Eberl, made it clear the team's plan to retain the Canadian international and the rest of the players who could leave for free next June 30.
"It is no secret that we are talking with the agents of the players whose contracts are about to expire", stated the Bavarian executive when asked about Davies' future, who a couple of months ago seemed determined to leave for another team. Although the club is confident in resolving the operation soon, Eberl refrained from discussing dates or declaring the negotiations with the players pending renewal as concluded.
"We have a match on Saturday, so I rule out anything happening this week. What we have all agreed on is that we will not enter the important phase of the season with these kinds of matters pending", added the Bavarian executive. Bayern will return to action in the Bundesliga this weekend, visiting Borussia Mönchengladbach. In that sense, the club's stance is clear: resolve the continuity of Davies and the rest of the key players as soon as possible.
Barcelona Will Keep an Eye on the Future of Other Key Bayern Players
In that group are Joshua Kimmich and Leroy Sané, who could also leave for free in the summer. The winger is currently the one who seems least willing to renew. Being two very valuable players who could arrive at 'zero cost', Barcelona is keeping a close eye on the future of both, with Kimmich being one of the options that interests the management and coaching staff the most to strengthen the midfield.
In Davies' case, the Catalans have stepped back from the 'race' for his signing several weeks ago, as the salary the defender aspires to is too high for Barcelona's budget. Madrid, on the other hand, was willing to cover the left-back's salary, as long as he arrived at the Santiago Bernabéu. Recent reports warn that Bayern would end up renewing him for 15 million euros gross per year and his release clause would rise to 150 'million'.
