The FC Barcelona board is still not clear about the renewal of Frenkie de Jong. The midfielder should extend his contract this year, but negotiations have cooled after his injury

Calendar of FC Barcelona

Frenkie de Jong is one of the pending files to be resolved before the end of the year for the FC Barcelona board. The midfielder's contract ends in 2026 and, due to his high salary (his gross salary is the second highest in the squad), the ideal is to agree on a contractual extension that, at the same time, allows his emoluments to be readjusted.

However, beyond the information leaked last month by journalist Nicolò Schira about Arkel's renewal, the truth is that, for now, the club has no news on the matter. The '21' returned this month after spending six months in the Barça infirmary and is totally focused on recovering 100% physically.

On Wednesday, in fact, he played half an hour against Bayern Munich, with which he is taking firm steps to fight for a place in the Barça XI. De Jong is clear about his desire to stay at the club, regardless of how much the rumors about his departure in recent summer markets have bothered him. However, he will take time to speak with the board, once he regains his lost prominence with the first team.

Marc Casadó and Pedri González have been doing a great job in the center of the field. In theory, Casadó would be the one sacrificed by Hansi Flick when Frenkie is back to full strength, but everything will depend on the work they both do in the coming weeks. Eric García is the other alternative available in terms of pivots, in addition to a Gavi always willing to help wherever the coach requires him.

De Jong's starting price could drop considerably in 2025

If his renewal is not resolved in the coming weeks, Barça would seek to close the transfer of Arkel in the next summer market, although his starting price would not be the same as other transfer windows.

The culés hope to earn at least 70 million euros for the Dutchman, but his injuries in recent months, in addition to the contractual factor (he would be a free agent in 2026) can considerably lower the price of the 27-year-old footballer, who is currently valued at 60 'kilos' on Transfermarkt.

On the contrary, if De Jong becomes a starter again and renews until 2029, his starting price would not suffer major changes. In any case, the midfielder will have the final say on his future, with Manchester United still waiting to sign him, regardless of Erik ten Hag's future.
