FC Barcelona does not forget Mikayil Faye. Although the center-back has played little for Rennes, his first appearances of the season were auspicious
Mikayil Faye begins to recover from a difficult summer. The Senegalese moved to Stade Rennes after a great year with Barça Atlètic, but some physical problems prevented him from being at his best at the start of the French league. However, he started in the last game before the break, against Monaco (he played 71 minutes in the 2-1 defeat), a duel where he exhibited the order and physical potential that characterized him during his time in Barcelona.
At the moment, Sedhiou's player has only accumulated 95 minutes of action in Ligue 1, since he was not called up on the second matchday and, between matchday 3 and 5, he remained on the bench. Beyond this, Barça remains very attentive to the future of the 20-year-old defender, a player that the club was counting on in the long term, but for different reasons he ended up leaving earlier than expected.
The amount that Barça will have to pay to recover Mika Faye
In accordance with what was agreed between Barça and Stade Rennes this summer, the Barça team has a buyback option for Mika in exchange for 25 million euros, that is, 14.7 'kilos' more than what the French paid for his transfer (€10.3M). In addition, the culé board reserved 25% of the center-back's sporting rights with respect to a future sale. The 20-year-old player is listed for around €10M on Transfermarkt and, if he wins the title with Julien Stephan's team, it is very likely that his value will increase considerably in the first half of 2025.
For Hansi Flick, Faye was one of the interesting alternatives offered by the subsidiary, but the 'overbooking' of center backs in the first team squad, along with the need to make money, opened the door to the Senegalese despite the good level shown with the subsidiary and its interesting projection. The transfer, however, suited the defender, as it was time to make the leap to elite football and, with the reserve team still in the Primera RFEF, his continuity lost meaning.
Meanwhile, Barça keeps its sights set on Sedhiou's every step in Ligue 1 and, looking to the future, the center-back still has options to, why not, live a second stage in Catalonia, perhaps with a starring role. In 2023/24, Mika played 35 games (3,056 minutes) in which he scored 4 goals, being a key piece for Rafa Márquez in the team that was one step away from moving up to the Second Division.
