Wojciech Szczesny could define his future at FC Barcelona sooner than expected. The 34-year-old goalkeeper came out of retirement to sign for a single season with Barça, but the Barça board does not rule out renewing him for one more year, understanding that, after the return of Marc-André ter Stegen next summer, it will be a good time to make money with Iñaki Peña.

According to 'MARCA', the board's objective is also to extend the contract of the man from Alicante, whose relationship with the club ends in 2026. However, as he is a young goalkeeper with excellent projection, the best thing would be to give him a break in another team. , assuming that Ter Stegen will regain ownership if he completely overcomes the serious injury to his right knee that left him out for the rest of 2024/25.

In that sense, Barça would see Szczesny as the German's ideal substitute for 2025/26. Although he has not yet made his debut, the one from Warsaw has shown an impeccable physique in training and, most importantly, has assumed his role as substitute with total professionalism. Wojciech arrived to help the team and is 100% committed to the project, a fundamental reason for betting on its continuity.

Barça is very satisfied with the work of Szczesny

In an interview with 'Mundo Deportivo', Deco made clear the club's position regarding the former Juventus goalkeeper. The culé sports director considers that the experienced goalkeeper has fitted in very well with the squad, providing "balance and competitiveness" with a very positive impact on the group dynamic.

"The decision to play will always be the coach's, but I think that competitiveness in the squad is important. What we want with Szczesny is for Iñaki and him to be fighting to play, for both of them to be working and respecting each other," explained the Portuguese. For Hansi Flick, Peña is the starter in the League and Champions League, although the decision is not final.

For now, the man from Alicante has responded well to the coach's trust, beyond having kept a clean sheet in only 4 of the 10 games he has played (Getafe, Young Boys, Alavés and Real Madrid). Szczesny, for his part, has gone 6 consecutive games without minutes, but remains calm for the future. The opportunity will come for the Pole and Barça will have no trouble covering the goal until Ter Stegen can return.
