Frenkie de Jong puts his injury behind him and becomes key for Barça, while Manchester United is keeping a close watch.
Frenkie de Jong is starting to reap the rewards of his redemption at FC Barcelona. The Dutchman has rediscovered his best form during the second half of this season, and his great performances led to him being called up again by Ronald Koeman for the Netherlands national team, which will face Spain in a two-legged quarter-final match of the Nations League.
Less than 48 hours before the clash against the team managed by Luis de la Fuente, the FC Barcelona midfielder spoke to the media and went into detail about his current form, having overcome the ankle injury that kept him sidelined for five months. "It is something completely overcome. I feel good again. I no longer think about it when I'm on the field, so that's it," the player acknowledged.
De Jong, however, did admit that this physical setback was a significant burden for a long time. "It was definitely a burden. It took a long time, and when it takes a long time and you don't know exactly when it will end, a kind of doubt arises. Sometimes it was difficult to deal with the ankle. But now, as I said, I don't think about it when I play," detailed the player, who aims to be key for the team in the decisive stretch of the season.
Manchester United reportedly offered a fortune for his signing
With his physical problems being a thing of the past, everything indicates that Frenkie will play a major role in Hansi Flick's team in the coming weeks, especially after the injury of Marc Casadó, which has left the '21' without competition in the midfield. This change of role could further accelerate his renewal with Barça, as his current contract expires in 2026 and the idea of the sports management is to secure his continuity for three more seasons.
However, Manchester United intends to intervene in the plans of the Catalans with De Jong. According to 'El Nacional.cat', the 'red devils' are still dreaming of incorporating the Dutchman into their ranks and are willing to pay a figure close to 50 million euros to secure his signature.
As of today, it seems unlikely that the Catalan entity will agree to part with one of the players most valued by the coach. However, if the negotiations for the extension of his contract take an unexpected turn and end up falling through, the Blaugrana could consider the offer from the Mancunians, which, among other things, would allow them to free up salary mass and generate funds to undertake the signing of, for example, a 'TOP' winger like Luis Díaz. In the coming weeks, the outcome of the 'soap opera' will be revealed.
