Frenkie de Jong still gives no clues about his future. In principle, the player does not plan to leave Barça, but his renewal remains unresolved. What will the board do?

Calendar of FC Barcelona

The FC Barcelona board and Frenkie de Jong still have much to resolve regarding his contract. The 27-year-old player signed until 2026 in his last renewal and receives one of the highest salaries in the squad. For now, his performance in 2025 has been remarkable, but the board does not want to delay a possible renewal any longer.

"I am very happy to play and live in Barcelona", he said when asked about his future. However, the midfielder avoided giving details about contacts with the board related to the signing of a new contract.

The player from Arkel is one of the players who start their last year of contract next season and the club does not want any key player to start the 2025-26 season with the possibility of leaving for free in the following summer market.

Hence, for Barça, his renewal is one of the priority issues for next summer. Frenkie receives 19 million euros gross per season and the club's idea is to negotiate a fee that does not represent a difficult burden to bear. For now, including bonuses and variables, the player's emoluments reach 25 'kilos'.

Frenkie de Jong, calm about his future in Barcelona

However, De Jong does not seem to be in a hurry to discuss the details of his new contract. "There will be time for everything", he added when referring to his future. The match in Dortmund was his 36th game of the season, where he has already reached 1,820 minutes.

In the second half of the season, the Dutchman has not only consolidated his place in Hansi Flick's lineup. He is also showing a spectacular level, with his best version in a long time. Against Borussia, he was the player with the most completed passes (68 out of 75, with a 91% success rate) and who caused the most fouls (4).

Without Pedri on the field, Barça found it very difficult to generate play, but the team maintained balance between its lines thanks to Frenkie's work. Like Marc Casadó, the '21' has become an ideal partner for the Canary Islander, taking charge of giving the team a clear outlet, in addition to maintaining effective pressure and recovery.

Hence, his situation within the club has taken a radical turn in recent months. At the end of 2024, the midfielder seemed like one of the fixed names on the list of transferable players for next summer. Now, he has returned to being one of the leaders of a Barça that aspires to win its third treble this year. Will the board manage to close his renewal in June?
