The FC Barcelona board has resumed negotiations with Frenkie de Jong to finalize his renewal before next summer. The Dutchman now seems willing to sign a new contract
Frenkie de Jong and FC Barcelona have resumed talks to extend the contract of the 27-year-old midfielder, which ends in June 2026. The Blaugrana board had presented, at the end of 2023, a proposal that expired last year without any response from the player from Arkel. Physical problems and a loss of prominence within the squad cast doubt on the continuity of '21', but Hansi Flick has gradually managed to recover the best version of the Dutch international.
In this regard, 'SPORT' claims that Frenkie's intention is to stay many more years in Barcelona, as his family is happy living in Catalonia. Furthermore, the possibility of having a significant role within a promising sports project fits perfectly into the plans of a player who arrived at Barça in 2019 with the hope of winning everything. So far, the Champions League is the only title that eludes the midfielder, after winning a Copa del Rey (2021), a La Liga (2023), and two Supercopa de España (2023 and 2025).
According to the Catalan newspaper, the new offer from Barça to De Jong would be for three seasons, until June 2029, at a rate of 19 million euros gross per year. This would allow the player to maintain his current salary and the status of the second highest-paid player in the squad, behind Robert Lewandowski. However, the new contract does not include any of the deferred salary from his renewal in 2020, the year in which almost all the club's key players agreed to lower their wages due to the pandemic.
Full confidence from Barça in the renewal of Frenkie de Jong
For Frenkie, the most sensible choice is to stay at Barça, a club where, beyond the rumors, he has always felt comfortable. The appearances of Marc Bernal and Marc Casadó compromised his starting position in the early months of the 2024/25 season, but this year the Dutchman has regained prominence both in La Liga and in the Champions League. Not for nothing, he is already nearing the barrier of 1,300 minutes played in 28 matches where he has scored a couple of goals and provided one assist.
Deco and his agent started discussions several days ago for the signing of the new contract, which should be finalized before the opening of the next summer transfer market. The board insists on resolving all contracts expiring in 2026 in the coming months, and De Jong is one of the priority files, due to the high amount of his salary and his importance in Hansi Flick's plans. Looking ahead to the 25/26 season, the signing of another defensive pivot is practically ruled out.
