One of FC Barcelona's discards for 2024/25 found a team in LaLiga on Wednesday. It is Marcos Alonso, who will continue his career at Celta de Vigo. The full-back signed for one season plus an optional one

Calendar of FC Barcelona

Celta Vigo made the signing of Marcos Alonso official on Wednesday. The 33-year-old defender was free after finishing his contract with FC Barcelona, where he played a total of 45 official matches (2,360 minutes) in which he scored 3 goals, as well as lifting a couple of trophies (LaLiga and the Spanish Super Cup in 2023). For the left-back, the Galician team will be his third team in Spanish football after his time in the Real Madrid youth academy.

Alonso left the 'Fábrica' in 2010 for England, signing for Bolton for 2.4 million euros. Three years later he left for Fiorentina at 'zero cost', where he completed two stages (he played a semester on loan at Sunderland in 2014). In 2016 he signed for Chelsea for 23 million net, a club where he lived his best stage as a professional (he won a Champions League and a Club World Cup in 2021).

In 2022 he arrived at Barça on a free transfer after six seasons in London and never managed to earn a starting place under Xavi Hernández, although in his first year he was an important player for the Egarense. Last season, a lumbago forced him to undergo surgery, playing just 8 games (393 minutes) in all competitions. This led the board to rule out his renewal, in addition to not counting on Hansi Flick's plans.

Celta trusts Marcos Alonso with a 1+1 contract

This Wednesday, Celta officially announced the signing of Marcos Alonso after several days of negotiations between the parties. The defender signed for one season plus an optional one and hopes to be a starter in the team managed by Claudio Giráldez, who started the season winning their first two games. The Galicians have not yet considered the transfer market closed and hope to add another reinforcement before 23:59 on Friday 30 August, provided they first finalise the departure of three discards.
