Hansi Flick praised the work of Iñigo Martínez this season. For the German coach, if the '5' maintains his current level, his renewal will be a fact soon

Calendar of FC Barcelona

Iñigo Martínez has been one of the big surprises of 2024/25 for FC Barcelona. The one from Ondarroa went from being one of the fixed discards for Xavi Hernández in the summer to leading the culé defense under the orders of Hansi Flick. At the moment, he already has a couple of goals and assists in 15 games (1,326 minutes), with only one day of rest (against Villarreal).

The Basque has formed a very reliable duo with Pau Cubarsí, giving security to a team that defends with very high lines. Flick has found the key to success for his scheme with a mix of youth and experience that has in the central markers the best example of what the coach is looking for.

When talking about Iñigo's current situation, Flick did not spare his praise for the experienced Spanish defender. After a year complicated by plantar fasciitis, the former Athletic Club defender has recovered the solidity that characterized him during his time at San Mamés.

"His performance is great, he is a leader. It is a very young team, so it is important to have experienced footballers like Iñigo. In training he usually wins all the duels," the coach began by describing the Ondarroa player's moment.

In that sense, he made it clear that, if he maintains his current level, there are no doubts about his renewal, although he left the decision, as appropriate, in the hands of the board. "Discussing the contract is not part of my job. My job is to improve the team, but if it works, the normal thing is that the bond will be renewed. The performance of the last games is incredible," Flick said.

Martínez has a contract until June 2025 and last summer he was even able to terminate after Barça's delay in registering him in LaLiga. However, the man from Ondarroa never thought about leaving and is obtaining the rewards he deserves for his effort and professionalism.

In principle, the Barça board will begin contacts with Iñigo about a new contract once it resolves the pending registrations of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor. Once LaLiga receives the documentation corresponding to Barça's new contract with Nike, it is likely that the club will be able to resolve these operations and finally return to the 1/1 rule to reinforce itself in 2025 without restrictions.
