Porto has reported that it exercised the purchase option from FC Barcelona for 20% of the profits from the transfer of Nico González to City
Nico González signs with Manchester City until 2029 in a multimillion transfer. Manchester City has finalized at the last moment of the winter transfer market the signing of Nico González, a 23-year-old Galician midfielder trained at La Masía. The English club has paid the player's release clause, valued at 60 million euros, to strengthen its midfield and mitigate the absence of Rodri.
The last-minute signing that Guardiola requested. Pep, in search of solutions to improve City's inconsistent first half of the season, had already added defenders Khusanov and Reyes, as well as forward Marmoush to his squad. However, the Catalan coach needed a midfielder and had to wait until the last moment of the market to finalize it.
At midnight, the English club officially announced the signing of Nico González, who arrived at Porto in 2023 from FC Barcelona for 8.5 million euros. After establishing himself under the orders of Sérgio Conceição, the player did not play the last match of Porto against Rio Ave, in anticipation of his imminent transfer to City, where he signs a contract until 2029.
No discounts: Zubizarreta resisted the pressure
The negotiations were not easy. Porto's sporting director, Andoni Zubizarreta, stood firm and rejected any attempt from City to obtain a reduction in the release clause. Ultimately, the English club had no choice but to pay the full 60 million demanded.
10 million for Barcelona's coffers
The transfer of Nico González is good news for FC Barcelona, which retained 40% of a future sale when it sold him to Porto. Thanks to this clause, the Blaugrana club was to receive 20.64 million euros; however, a clause in the transfer agreement has substantially altered the financial outcome of the operation.
Porto has officially stated that it exercised the clause that allowed it to repurchase 20% of Barcelona's share in the sale. The Portuguese club activated this option by paying 3 million euros to Barcelona, significantly reducing the amount that the Catalan team will receive. In this new scenario, Barcelona will not earn the initially expected 24 million, but 9 million for the remaining percentage plus the 3 million from the repurchase, totaling 12 million euros.

A transfer with impact for Barça
Nico González, 22 years old, left Barcelona in the summer of 2023 for Porto after not having enough opportunities in Xavi Hernández's scheme. Since his arrival at the Portuguese club, he has proven to be a key pillar in the midfield under the direction of Martín Anselmi. With 29 matches played this season, 27 of them as a starter, the Galician midfielder has established himself as a fundamental piece in the 'dragons' team.
Laporta also smiles with Estanis Pedrola
In addition to the Nico case, another operation that benefits Barça is that of Estanis Pedrola. The winger from Reus, who debuted with the first team under Xavi, has been loaned from Sampdoria to Bologna, with an option to buy of four million euros.
If the Italian club exercises the purchase option in the summer, Barça would earn half of the operation, as it retained 50% of the player's rights after selling him to Sampdoria for three million. Although the amount is smaller compared to that of Nico González, any income is welcome at Can Barça.
