Jeremie Frimpong remains one of the top options for Barça for the right-back position
Jeremie Frimpong, right-back for Bayer Leverkusen, has been the subject of interest from FC Barcelona to strengthen a position where, this season, Jules Koundé has established himself as untouchable. However, the lack of a reliable backup for the French international prompts the club's management to consider bringing in another natural defender for that position, as the Parisian is a center-back converted into a full-back.
The operation, however, will not be easy for Barça to undertake. Leverkusen has set a transfer fee of around 40 million euros for Frimpong, according to 'BILD', while the Catalan club does not intend to spend more than 25 'million' on signing another full-back, whether to cover for Koundé or Alejandro Balde on the left.
In this regard, Hansi Flick has already given the 'ok' to the possible signing of the '30' from Bayer, highlighting his ability to compete for a starting spot with Koundé and adapt to different tactical systems, as he is a player with a lot of attacking presence. In the 2024-25 season, the Dutch international has 4 goals and 11 assists in 40 matches (2,838 minutes) with Xabi Alonso's team.
Liverpool, Barça's main rival for Frimpong
In addition to Barça, Liverpool is also interested in Frimpong, which could complicate his signing. The 'reds' need to go for another right-back to cover the possible departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has also been rumored as a potential reinforcement for Barça and Real Madrid in recent weeks. However, the Catalans are not willing to take on his very high salary.
On the other hand, Leverkusen's stance regarding Jeremie’s departure is complex. The defender is under contract until 2028, which means he can demand an amount close to his current market value (50 'million'). Additionally, the team from Leverkusen has a policy of selling players to refinance their signings, suggesting that they would not oppose a sale if the clause is met (40M €).
Overall, Jeremie Frimpong has been key for Bayer Leverkusen in the last two seasons, standing out for his speed, ability to break through defenses, and offensive contributions. His signing could be crucial for Barça, allowing Flick to have a luxury replacement for Koundé. Beyond this, the transfer fee and competition from other clubs could influence Deco and Joan Laporta's final decision regarding entering the bidding for the Amsterdam native.
