The renewal of Iñigo Martínez is postponed until summer. LaLiga does not relent and insists that the club does not have the salary margin to register the new contract of the center-back

Calendar of FC Barcelona

Iñigo Martínez is starting to gain ground again in the first team of FC Barcelona. After overcoming the thigh injury that kept him sidelined for almost the entire month of January, the center-back has returned to enjoy minutes and consistency in recent matches and continues to make it clear that he has the level necessary to occupy a place in the center of defense despite the presence of Ronald Araujo and Pau Cubarsí.

Apart from his growing prominence on the field, the player is still waiting to resolve his contractual situation. The player is assured of his continuity in the Catalan city for at least one more season, although the official announcement of the renewal will have to wait due to the obstacles imposed by LaLiga, which maintains that the club does not have sufficient salary margin to register the new contract of the defender.

This is reported by 'Mundo Deportivo', which states that the azulgrana entity intended to formalize the extension of the player's contract last January, once his return to the 1:1 rule was confirmed. However, although they had already obtained the green light from the governing body, they were informed at the last minute that the Basque's commitment could not be registered due to a lack of financial 'fair play'.

There are no doubts at Barça about Iñigo's future

Despite the fact that at Can Barça they argue that the extension of Iñigo's contract should have been allowed since it included a clause stipulating such a possibility, LaLiga understands that Martínez's agreement is different from that of Lewandowski, which was already fully registered for four seasons even though the Catalans had the option to terminate his contract at the end of the current season if the Pole did not play 55% of the official matches.

Beyond all this 'hurdle', what is clear in the offices of Spotify Camp Nou is that the defender's continuity next season is a fact and it is only a matter of waiting for the opening of the summer market to make it official. At that moment, the culés will have the necessary salary margin to register his contract, so it is just a matter of time to seal the stay of one of the leaders of Flick's project.
