Lothar Matthäus is always an authorized voice to talk about current affairs at Bayern Munich. In a recent interview, the Bavarian legend opened the door to the signing of Joshua Kimmich for FC Barcelona

The Bayern Munich board seems to already give up on Joshua Kimmich. The 29-year-old player's contract ends in June 2025 and, after several failed contacts to renew his contract, the one from Rottweil would be convinced of making the leap to another great. At least that's what Lothar Matthäus believes, who spoke about the case of the Munich '6' in an interview with the local newspaper 'Abendzeitung'.

"Bayern has a great team, a great style of play and a great atmosphere, but maybe Kimmich wants to try something different," the German football legend began. In that sense, he added: "We know that at Barcelona there is a coach, Hansi Flick, who has him in very high esteem."

And, for the culé coach, Joshua was one of the market priorities at the beginning of last summer. However, Barça's financial restrictions and the talent of young people like Marc Bernal and Marc Casadó made the club rule out incorporating another defensive pivot. Furthermore, Flick trusted the abilities of Eric García and Andreas Christensen to lend a hand in the midfield if circumstances required it.

Bayern does not want to lose another of its 'cracks' for free

Beyond losing one of its figures, what bothers Bayern the most is resigning itself to letting another of its 'cracks' go with a letter of freedom. The Bavarians already lost David Alaba in the same way in 2021, when the Austrian defender decided to leave for Real Madrid. In this regard, Lothar Matthäus lamented what he believes would be a hard blow for the Bavarians.

"I think it would be a shame if (Kimmich) left Bayern. He is an exemplary professional and, together with Musiala, will be the face of the club in the future. Therefore, it would be a big loss if another top-level player left with the letter of freedom".

However, the former 1990 world champion player did not consider the exit of the '6' closed at this point in the season. "Your situation has changed with Kompany. We must leave the past behind and try to reach an agreement," said Matthäus.

And since the arrival of the Belgian coach, the one from Rottweil has played every possible minute in 16 games (1,440') in all competitions (Bundesliga, Pokal and Champions League), showing a much better level than last year. This has aroused more interest from other European greats, but Barça seems to have other priorities for the upcoming summer market.
