Luis Enrique will be part of the celebrations for the 125th anniversary of FC Barcelona. In an interview for '3Cat' related to the birthday of the Blaugrana team, the Asturian coach surprised everyone by stating that "it would be nice" to sit on the 'merengue' bench in the future. However, he was quick to reveal that it was all a joke.
"I don't think there is anyone in history who has been a player and coach of Barça and Madrid... so I can break a record. I'm not going to do it," he said laughing, almost falling out of his chair. The 54-year-old coach has a contract with Paris Saint-Germain until the end of the current season and was one of the names that was strongly mentioned as a possible replacement for Xavi Hernández on the Barça bench.
Similarly, 'Lucho' has also been in the orbit of Atlético de Madrid, although, for the moment, Diego Simeone's continuity is not at risk. The situation is very different at Real Madrid, where Carlo Ancelotti has entered the tightrope after the poor results of the 'merengues' in the last two months.
Luis Enrique recalled the biggest betrayal in the history of Barça
Luis Enrique played a total of 241 games for Madrid between 1991 and 1996 before signing for Barça, a club with which he ended up retiring eight years later after playing 333 official matches in which he scored 115 goals. As a Barça coach he spent three seasons in the reserve team and another three in the first team, where he won everything between 2014 and 2017.
Referring to the most famous reference in terms of players who wore the shirt of both teams, the Asturian recalled how Luis Figo's first visit to the Camp Nou was experienced in October 2000. "That day, 45 minutes before, the Camp Nou was packed to the rafters. When we were warming up, we couldn't hear each other," said the PSG coach.
He added: "There was an energy that was almost scary. Figo was marked by a very young Puyol, a beast. Figo was the best of Madrid despite that pressure that I would not have imagined there would be; we won the game because it was impossible not to win it." The match ended 2-0, with goals from Luis Enrique himself and Simao.
