Ronald Araujo's renewal with FC Barcelona until 2031 involves an update in the defender's salary and clause. According to 'Relevo', the 'charrúa' will have an "ascending" release price
Ronald Araujo signed a new contract with FC Barcelona this week, after two weeks of rumors about his possible departure to Juventus this January. The club convinced the Uruguayan international to extend his bond with the institution for five more seasons, until June 2031. However, unlike the previous contract of the 'charrúa', this time there will not be a prohibitive clause in between.
Like most key players in the squad, Araujo had a release price of 1 billion euros. According to 'Relevo', the update of his contract, in addition to a significant salary increase (the '4' currently earns 7 'kilos' net per year), includes an "ascending" clause that starts at 65 million euros for next summer. After that, this amount will gradually increase by 15M€ in each transfer window.
Thus, Ronald will cost 80 'kilos' in January 2026 and 95M€ in July of the following year. However, looking ahead to the upcoming summer market, the center-back ensures he has an affordable price to negotiate with any team. Barça rejected offers in 2024 around 80 'kilos', but he could be transferred from the next June 30 for 15M€ less. For now, the 26-year-old defender is valued at around 55 million on Transfermarkt.
Barça leaves Ronald Araujo's future in his hands
In this way, Barça respects Araujo's stance regarding having full control over his future. The defender made it clear after renewing his commitment and unconditional affection for the club, but he prefers to reserve an 'escape route' that satisfies all parties. On one hand, the Uruguayan reserves the possibility to decide when and where to leave, while Barça guarantees a considerable income, bypassing complex negotiations.
Looking ahead to next summer, much will depend on the prominence he manages to have with the team led by Hansi Flick. The injury of Iñigo Martínez has allowed Ronald to return to the starting eleven immediately, but by mid-February, with the return of the Basque, his situation may change, depending on the level that the '4' shows in the coming weeks. Although the South American player is still not at 100%, he has left good impressions against Getafe and Benfica, although against the Portuguese, the team had a rough night defensively.
