The Bayern Munich board seems to be giving up on the possibility of signing Florian Wirtz this summer. The winger is also highly regarded in Barcelona, but his price is very high
Bayern Munich seems to be saying goodbye to the dream of signing Florian Wirtz this summer. At least that’s what the honorary president of Munich, Uli Hoeness, indicated in a recent interview. Given his market value (140 million euros) and contract, the 'star' of Bayer Leverkusen is, for now, almost impossible to fit into Bayern's finances looking ahead to 2025/26.
"We want to sign him. There are three parties involved… he still has a long-term contract in Leverkusen. I see the chances at 10%", the Bavarian honorary president began. In that sense, he was candid about the financial difficulties that such a large operation entails. The winger has a contract until 2027 and his transfer will exceed 100 million euros, along with a base contract in the range of 8-10 million net.
"As I see it now, there isn’t much money left for big purchases next year. What matters is not the sales, but the profits", Hoeness added in his talk with 'BILD'. Wirtz has scored 15 goals and provided 12 assists in 34 matches (2,560 minutes) with Leverkusen this season, very similar records to those he achieved in 23/24 with Xabi Alonso's team (18G and 20A).
Barça keeps options open to go for Wirtz this summer
For FC Barcelona, Florian remains one of the most valued left wingers for the upcoming summer market, although the price of his transfer is currently prohibitive for the club's finances. The club is leaning more towards an option in the range of 60-80M €, as there is also the possibility of bringing in another center forward and perhaps a left-back for 2025/26.
Moreover, to amortize these operations, Barça depends on at least one or two significant sales that allow enough money to flow into the club to cover each transfer. With the club back to the 1:1 rule, the board has a much broader margin to seek reinforcements, but it is necessary to do the math to then address the priorities that, line by line, the coaching staff considers. So far, Hansi Flick has worked smoothly with the Barça squad, even despite injuries and the mess that the registrations of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor caused.
