Viktor Gyökeres' future strongly points to the Premier League. Coach Ruben Amorim has reportedly requested Manchester United to sign the '9' in an attempt to save the season
FC Barcelona could say goodbye to its chances of signing Viktor Gyökeres in the upcoming transfer market. Although the Swedish forward has no intentions of leaving Sporting CP mid-season, the call from his former coach at the Lisbon club, Ruben Amorim, could change the plans for both the forward and the Portuguese club, with an offer that would be very hard to refuse.
According to the English newspaper 'Daily Star', Manchester United could present a first formal offer for the 26-year-old attacker in the coming days, with a transfer fee expected to leave around 100 million euros in Sporting's coffers. Viktor's contract runs until 2028, and his market value skyrocketed to 75 'kilos' in the last quarter of 2024, following his goal-scoring explosion this season.
Gyökeres, the last hope for United to escape their endless crisis
Gyökeres has attracted the interest of major European leagues after scoring 27 goals and providing 6 assists in 27 matches this season with the Lisbon team. His best moment came with Amorim on the bench at Estádio José Alvalade, and although the Portuguese coach reportedly agreed not to take the '9' to Old Trafford so soon, the 'red devils' results crisis forces him to seek immediate solutions in a season that could end very badly for his new team.
After defeating City in the Manchester derby, United has suffered three consecutive defeats in the Premier League against Bournemouth (0-3), Wolverhampton (2-0), and Newcastle (2-0). The most concerning aspect, aside from the poor performance displayed by 'ManU', has been their offensive apathy. The team failed to score in any of their recent defeats, and to make matters worse, next Sunday they face the league leaders, Liverpool, at Anfield Road.
The last visits of the 'red devils' to Merseyside have been tumultuous, with heavy defeats (4-0 in 2022, 7-0 in 2023) and only a goalless draw last season as an exception. Hence, Amorim is urging the club to make an effort for Gyökeres, also making a statement with a player who is also sought after by City. Furthermore, the team needs a turning point to try to save the season, as they currently sit in 14th place, just seven points above the relegation zone.
