Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly looking to sign Ronald Araújo in 2025. If he does not renew, Barça will open the door for him to leave
Ronald Araújo's contract is one of FC Barcelona's 'hot potatoes'. The centre-back's contract ends on 30 June 2026 and his renewal has been a real 'headache' for the club, as the player has refused to start negotiations for the extension of his contract. Although the Catalans are optimistic about this, the truth is that there has not yet been any major progress and his future remains open.
This situation is being followed by the continent's biggest clubs, who are on the trail of one of the best centre-backs in the world today. However, the 'CaughtOffside' portal has reported that Manchester United and Chelsea have shown a concrete interest in acquiring the services of the Uruguayan in the summer of 2025 if he decides not to extend his commitment to Barça.
Stamford Bridge is in urgent need of strengthening the centre of its defence, as the departure of Thiago Silva has left Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi as Enzo Maresca's first two options at the back. The performance of the two Frenchmen is leaving much to be desired, so the possible incorporation of Araújo would alleviate the defensive problems of the 'blues'.
United would like to give a 'double blow' to Barça
For their part, the catastrophic start to the season for Ten Hag's men has set off alarm bells at Old Trafford, where they are already looking for solutions to improve a squad that is not quite working. Araújo is an old desire of the 'red devils' and, in case the negotiations for his renewal do not come to fruition, they would be willing to make an effort to sign him.
The Mancunians have not forgotten Frenkie de Jong either, although the Dutchman's situation at the club is different as he has shown himself open to extending his contract in recent weeks. In principle, the Catalans would not want to part with Ronald, but if he decides not to sign a new contract, they would open the door for him to leave if they receive an offer that meets their financial demands.
At the moment, the Uruguayan is focused on recovering 100% from his injury and returning to the Barça first team, a return that is planned for the end of this year or the beginning of the next. Once he has rejoined the squad, they will try to find a solution for his future, which is more up in the air than ever.
