Barça could have signed Nico Williams last summer, but they have 'passed' on his signing due to the player's desire to stay in Bilbao
Nico Williams was the star of the biggest soap opera of last summer at FC Barcelona. The footballer was at the top of the list of priorities for the Blaugrana team in the transfer market, but after several 'back and forth', the player finally stayed in Bilbao to defend the Athletic Club shirt, at least, for one more season.
Months after the 'failed' operation for the Navarrese winger, Enric Masip, a member of the Blaugrana sports commission, revealed in an interview given to 'El Chiringuito de Jugones' the reason why the youngest of the Williams did not land in Barcelona during the summer window.
The reason why Barça 'ruled out' Nico's arrival
When asked by Josep Pedrerol about why Nico's operation did not come to fruition, Masip assured that "that is a part that is more the responsibility of the sporting management. If a player who is of interest to you does not want to move, you do not have much room for manoeuvre. You cannot do many things either", making it clear that the player had no intention of leaving his current club.
However, the advisor to the Barça presidency ruled out the possibility that Williams' refusal came from doubts about his registration. "Well, I don't know in detail, but it is hard for me to think that if you were going to sign Nico Williams you were not going to be able to register him. Barça was not going to pay 50-60 million for a player if they were not going to be able to register him. So, well, it would surely have been done," he concluded.
Beyond this, the name of the forward would still be an attractive option in the offices of the Spotify Camp Nou. However, the Catalans would only try to sign him if the current contractual conditions are maintained, including a 58 million euro release clause. Otherwise, the Catalans would turn the page and focus on other objectives, with Kvaratskhelia and Leao as possible alternatives for the left winger.
