Barça is betting on another loan, although they always leave the Portuguese as a last-minute alternative, depending on what happens with players like Nico Williams, Raphinha, Ferran Torres or Ansu Fati.
Thus, the player will have to evaluate whether he spends the entire month of August waiting for the Catalan team or, for example, gives in to the interest of Benfica, the club where he was trained and where he amazed friends and strangers at just 19 years old. The Portuguese team could soon have the financial capacity to face the operation in the current terms, in which Atlético is asking for 60 million euros for his signing, with the Lisbon team trying to buy 50% of his rights.
In Portugal and England, the strategy is clear
Emery and Monchi's Aston Villa have also been in the player's entourage, and they do have the ability to move the player from Madrid, although in the last few hours they have decided to focus on other operations and try to play on Atleti's desperation. Both Benfica and Villa know that if the Colchoneros only have a loan of Joao as an alternative, they will end up lowering their demands and giving in to a lower offer to, at least, recover some of their failed investment of 120 million euros.
