Piotr Zielinski could have been a FC Barcelona player in 2020. The Catalans offered three youth players for the Pole, but Napoli rejected the offer
FC Barcelona could have secured the services of Piotr Zielinski in the 2020 transfer market. The current Inter Milan player, then at Napoli, has revealed the details of his possible arrival in Barcelona that summer during a recent interview reported by several Polish media.
In the year of the Covid-19 pandemic, the midfielder was negotiating his renewal with the Neapolitans, and in the meantime he received several offers to change teams, with one of these arriving from the offices of the Spotify Camp Nou. "It was supposed to be an exchange," began the footballer, who assured that the agreement consisted of him signing as a Blaugrana and "young Barça players would go to Napoli."
Napoli president avoided transfer
Zielinski could have been the first Polish footballer in Barça's history before Lewandowski signed for the club in the summer of 2022 in exchange for "two or three players from La Masia". However, the transfer fell through because "apparently De Laurentiis (Napoli president) preferred me".
Finally, Piotr ended up extending his contract with Napoli for four seasons, obtaining more advantageous conditions due to the interest of so many clubs that were interested in signing him. Now, four years later, the midfielder left Diego Armando Maradona to defend the shield of Inter Milan, with whom he signed until 2028.
