Why is Barça hesitant to sign Jonathan David? Here we explain the reasons
The negotiations between FC Barcelona and Jonathan David seem stalled. Although the 25-year-old forward has expressed his interest in joining the Blaugrana, a club he has supported since childhood, and his contract with Lille expires at the end of the 2024-25 season, which would allow for a 'free transfer', Barça does not seem to have made significant progress in the negotiations.
The sporting management of Barça, led by Deco, has been monitoring the player, but there are doubts about whether his profile fits the playing style implemented by Hansi Flick. Furthermore, the continuity of Robert Lewandowski, who has secured another season at the club, has cooled interest in the Lille striker.
This season, the Brooklyn-born player has scored 23 goals and provided 10 assists in 41 matches (3,284 minutes) with Bruno Génésio's team. 7 of his goals came in the Champions League, where he had the luxury of scoring against Real Madrid, Atlético (a brace), Juventus, Liverpool, and Dortmund, making him the standout player in Lille's historic performance (they reached the round of 16 avoiding the 'play-off').
The Premier League seems to be distancing Jonathan David from Barcelona
For now, Jonathan David has several offers from the Premier League, including from Manchester United, Arsenal, and Aston Villa, which could influence his decision, which may come by the end of April. Although his camp has not lost hope for an agreement with Barça, the negotiations seem to have stalled.
Outside of England, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are also keeping an eye on his future, with 'La Vecchia Signora' being the most interested. Everything points to the 'bianconeris' letting Dusan Vlahovic go this summer and the Lille 'killer' is one of the most valued options by the management. However, much will depend on the opinion of the coaching staff, which is another problem for Juve to resolve, as Thiago Motta seems to have his days counted at the club.
Ferran Torres, another obstacle for Jonathan David's arrival at Barça?
On the other hand, Ferran Torres could also play a significant role in FC Barcelona's decision regarding the possible signing of Jonathan David. His situation at the club is key, as the Blaugrana do not rule out including 'El Tiburón' in operations to acquire other players, such as Rafael Leão from AC Milan.
The departure of the Valencia player could clearly facilitate the arrival of a new forward, which could indirectly influence the decision to sign the Lille '9'. If Barça decides to part ways with the '7', this could open up space and resources for signings like the Canadian international, who would arrive with the mission of covering for Lewandowski. Will Barça bet on David instead of Ferran?
