FIFA presents two competitions that will put women's football in the spotlight for fans. Much to enjoy in the near future
The International Football Federation (FIFA), led by Gianni Infantino, announced plans that will be implemented, initially in 2026 with the Champions Cup and, two years later, in January 2028, with the launch of the Women's Club World Cup, competitions that the organization considers to be "historic".
In this way, women's football, which is experiencing exponential growth, enters a new dimension that will ensure its level and competition continue to rise.
When will the Women's Club World Cup take place?
Initially, the Women's Club World Cup was set to take place in 2026, but the governing body of world football wants to form a better organization and thus give more time for competitions and teams to prepare well, which is why its debut will be in 2028, between January and February, and it will be held every four years.
The search for high-level competitions and the intention to continue promoting the growth of women's football has led the confederations to agree to ensure that this new competition features 19 participants that will be divided by slots as follows:
UEFA: five direct slots and one play-in slot
- AFC, CAF, Concacaf, and CONMEBOL: two direct slots and one play-in slot each
- OFC: one play-in spot
This is how the new Women's Champions Cup will be
In this competition, the six clubs that win the continental competition of their confederation will have to compete in the years when the Women's Club World Cup is not held.
In the preliminary phase, the champion of the AFC will face the champion of the OFC in the first round, and the winner will have to play away against the CAF champion in the second round. Thus, the winners of round 2 will advance to the semifinals to face the UEFA champion, while the CONCACAF winner will meet the CONMEBOL champion.
"These FIFA competitions will stimulate growth, inspire athletes, create new rivalries, attract more fans, and crown heroines from all over the world," commented Infantino.
